Determination of Iodine Value in Palm Oil

Thanks to its simplicity, the innovative CDR method for the determination of Iodine Value (IV) in Palm Oil is ideal to be used during every process stage to monitor the quality of oil in real time and during the acceptance of crude oil, as well as during trading of finished products.

Method

Test type: kinetic
Colorimetric reaction at 420 nm
Testing time: one test 2 minute - 40 Tests/hour.
Are possible test sessions with several samples, up to a maximum of 14.
The system is supplied pre-calibrated and ready for use.
It is also possible to standardize the system using samples with a known value.

Calibration Curve / Correlation Data

CDR Iodine Value test shows a good correlation with AOCS Official Method Cd 1d-92. for refined and crude palm oil and palm kernel oil

Principle of the test

Double bonds react with iodine in alcoholic solution determining a variation in the reagent’s absorbance. This amount measured at 420 nm is indirectly related with concentration of double bond in the sample, expressed as IV (Iodine Value).

The most important application of the iodine value is to determine the amount of unsaturation contained in fatty acids. This unsaturation is in the form of double bonds which react with iodine compounds. The higher the iodine value, the more unsaturated fatty acid bonds are present in a fat. Iodine value is used as a parameter in process control as well as a quality parameter in traded palm oil products.

Composition of the Kit and Reagents

Code *300555 suitable for 100 tests, contains:
- R1: Bottle containing 100 mL of reagent (mixture of alcohols, iodine and chromogenous compounds)
- 100 test cuvettes with caps.

Crude or refined palm oil, and palm kernel oil. Solid samples at room temperature must just be heated
