Determination of Calcium in Plant-based Beverages
The determination of calcium in plant-based beverages plays a very important role, especially considering that these products are increasingly used as alternatives to cow’s milk. Unlike dairy milk, plant-based drinks do not naturally contain significant amounts of calcium; for this reason, the mineral is often added through fortification. Analyzing and quantifying the calcium content therefore makes it possible to verify that the fortification level is adequate and that the product can effectively contribute to the daily intake of this nutrient, which is essential for bone and dental health as well as for numerous physiological processes such as muscle contraction and nerve impulse transmission.
Method
Test type: End Point.
Testing time: 2 minutes.
Analysis sessions with multiple samples are possible up to a maximum of 16 tests for CDR DrinkLab®.
...
Sample treatment
The dilution must be performed by adding 50 µL of sample into the dilution tube (code *300386).
Principle of the test
Calcium reacts with a chromogen and generates a colored complex, whose absorbance measured at 580 nm is proportional to the amount of the analyte present in the sample.
Calibration curve
The calibration curve was made using calcium solutions with known value. The trend of the curve confirmed an excellent linearity of the system over the whole measuring range.
